Citizenship test

How to apply

1. Life if the UK Test

Once you become eligible for the UK citizenship you may decide to start your naturalization process. As a first step you have to pass the test called "Life in the UK". The test was introduced by the UK government in November 2005 (as of April 2007 the applicants for permanent residence are alos required to take this test).

To prepare for the exam, you should study the book 'Life in the United Kingdom: A Journey to Citizenship' before you schedule the test. Make sure you read the latest edition of the book, which is available online from The Stationery Office and many bookshops. The test consists of 24 questions based on the information contained in the book .

The test itself costs £34. You will need to pay the fee at the test centre before you begin the test. You will have to complete the test in 45 minutes. If you suffer from a medical condition, you may be allowed extra time. You will be given the result on the same day and will receive a Pass Notification letter. Keep this letter in a safe place! If you lose it, you will have to take the test again.

If you pass the test you will not need any additional proof of your knowledge of English, as you need to be competent in English to pass the test which is in English. If your grasp of English is poor, you need to take an English language and Citizenship course (ESOL), to improve your English language skills and learn about life in the UK. Your certificate of progression from one  ESOL level to another, with a letter from the college confirming you completed an ESOL with citizenship course is an equivalent of the notification of passing "Life in the UK" test.

2. Application for Naturalization

Applications for naturalisation should be made using application form AN (available at the UK Border Agency of Home Office or on the website: www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk). The documents you must add to the application form:
- evidence of your identity, and
- evidence of your knowledge of English and life in the UK
You must pay the full fee when you make your application. Single application fee is £655 and
joint application is £735.  You may pay by cheque, credit card or debit card, or by using transcash. You should not send cash or postal orders.

If you apply from England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, your application form, fee and supporting documents should be sent to:
UK Border Agency
Department 1
PO Box 306
Liverpool
L2 0QN

Once your application has been approved you will be invited to a Citizenship ceremony to undertake an Oath and Pledge of loyalty. You will then be awarded your Certificate of Naturalisation. The certificate is your proof of British naturalisation. Once British naturalisation has been granted, it cannot be withdrawn.
British naturalisation grants you eligibility for a British passport.
